Artist's Philosophy  |  About Bob Hills

I'm often asked what equipment I use for fine art photography, as well as the commercial projects I photograph. Even though equipment is important, and I appreciate good equipment as much as anyone, I too often hear people say things like, "If I only had a great camera, I could take great pictures." That statement is very much misleading. Great pictures don't come automatically with superior equipment. The artist's eye and heart are, by far, the most important equipment in the creative process. The camera equipment is only the vehicle. I've seen great photographs taken with ametuer cameras and lenses and terrible photographs taken with very expensive, professional equipment. With that said, I'll list my equipment below.

My first choice of equipment is the 4x5 format. It gives great detail and control over perspective and plane of focus.
